IOM Committee on GME Financing Holds First Meeting - Sept. 11, 2012

The Institute of Medicine’s (IOM’s) Committee on Governance and Financing of Graduate Medical Education (GME) held its first meeting on Sept. 4 and 5 in Washington, DC. This committee was convened to independently assess the following issues:

  • current GME regulation, financing, content, governance and organization
  • recommendations on modifying GME to produce a physician workforce for a 21st century U.S. health care system that provides high-quality preventive, acute and chronic care and meets the needs of an aging and more diverse population
At the meeting, committee members began discussing the charge and scope of the committee and examining the various programs that fund GME. The committee heard from representatives from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Congress and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Presentations from those speakers can be found online. The committee will hold its next meeting on Dec. 20 and 21, which will include a longer public meeting for stakeholder input.
