NAPH appreciates President Barack Obama’s efforts to decrease the budget deficit and strengthen the nation through growth and innovation. However, we oppose health care cuts that will damage the safety net’s ability to do just that – innovate to ensure all Americans get the best care.

NAPH announced the results of an analysis conducted by NAPH that shows public healthcare safety net systems like the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation not only keep their communities healthy but also drive significant economic activity and are often the largest employers in their region.

NAPH President and CEO Bruce Siegel will make an announcement on Wednesday, October 26 at 1p.m. in the lobby of Bellevue Hospital about jobs and economic activity supported by the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) and safety net hospitals across the country.

NAPH applauds the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for making positive changes to its final rule – released today – for accountable care organizations under the Medicare Shared Savings Program.

Larry S. Gage, who founded NAPH in 1981 and has served for 30 years as NAPH’s president, announced he will retire from the position on July 1, 2011.

We commend the Commission’s decision not to accelerate cuts to essential Medicare and Medicaid supplemental payments that presently support many services for the nation’s most vulnerable populations.

While NAPH supports deficit reduction as one component of the nation’s future economic stability, NAPH strongly opposes the proposal in this draft to accelerate cuts in vital Medicare and Medicaid payments to safety net hospitals and health systems.

The National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems (NAPH) is pleased to announce the appointment of Bruce Siegel, MD, MPH, to the newly created position of Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Siegel succeeds Christine Capito Burch, who is retiring from NAPH after serving 20 years as Executive Director.

Christine Capito Burch, Executive Director for the National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems (NAPH), announced that she will retire in mid-2010. The NAPH Executive Committee will engage in a national search for a successor.

NAPH, Kaiser Permanente and the National Patient Safety Foundation today announced the “Patient Safety Initiative at America’s Public Hospitals.” This two-year program aims to enhance patient safety programs at public hospitals to ensure safe, high-quality care for vulnerable and low-income populations that depend on publicly supported health care institutions for medical care.

This morning, the American Hospital Association (AHA) and two other national associations (the Federation of American Hospitals and the Catholic Health Association) announced an agreement with the Senate Finance Committee and the Obama Administration to accept approximately $155 billion in reduced payments to hospitals over the next 10 years, in order to help finance health reform.
