The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on Aug. 24 issued a final rule that delays the compliance date for the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition, diagnosis and procedure codes, known as ICD-10. The final rule pushes back from Oct. 1, 2013, to Oct. 1, 2014, the compliance date for ICD-10, used to classify diseases and health problems. The new codes are expected to improve the quality of information available for quality improvement and payment. The final rule also includes provisions aimed at administration simplification.
