The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler

State Senate Bill 1300, passed in 1977, became a landmark piece of legislation for East Texas—through it, the Health Science Center became a component of The University of Texas System, becoming The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler. With more than 20 outpatient clinics, a hospital, and an Emergency Care Center—the UT Health Center has about 70 clinical faculty and 35 research faculty. The hospital has provided state-of-the-art cardiovascular services since 1981, and in 1983, its physicians performed the first open-heart surgery in East Texas. The UT Health Center has residency programs in family medicine, occupational medicine, and pharmacy, as well as master’s degree programs in biotechnology and environmental science.
