Erie County Medical Center (Buffalo, New York)

In 1905, the Municipal Hospital opened in Buffalo to serve smallpox patients. By 1918, the Buffalo City Hospital had taken its place and was treating virtually every known type of medical problem and training future physicians, dentists, nurses and dietitians. In the 1970s, a new building was constructed and renamed Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) to reflect the wide range of services provided. Today, ECMC is one of the country’s most modern, functional and efficient health care delivery systems encompassing an advanced academic medical center, on- and off-campus health centers, multiple outpatient specialty care clinics and a skilled nursing facility. ECMC is the adult regional center for trauma, burn care, rehabilitation and a major teaching facility for the State University of New York at Buffalo.
