Providing patient-centered care has been the focus of recent quality improvement and culture change initiatives. For clinicians to provide such care, they need to devote time and resources to develop personalized care plans that take into account patient preferences.

While equity is a key attribute to patient-centered care, ethnic/racial minorities are found at an unintended disadvantage in this model of health care in some cases. Although it is unlikely that clinicians directly express ethical/racial bias, empirical research has shown that clinicians might deliver care that is influenced by “unconscious bias” which, as a result, affects their HCAHPS scores.

During this distance learning workshop, experts from the field will share their key strategies and essential tools to reinforce cultural competency.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand how organizational culture can create barriers to cultural competency
  • Identify and understand what “unconscious bias” is
  • Provide valuable tools that can be used in a cultural competency framework to recognize and overcome “unconscious bias”
