Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, community engagement is defined as “the process of working collaboratively with groups of people who are affiliated by geographic proximity, special interests, or similar situations with respect to issues affecting their well-being.” Drawing on this principle, many members of America’s Essential Hospitals have developed and implemented a wide range of programs that aim to boost community engagement to expand access to care, enhance inpatient services, and address other public health needs.
