Rescue & Recovery Efforts: Haiti Earthquake 2010
On Jan. 12, 2010, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Haiti’s capital of Port-au-Prince, resulting in massive devastation. As the number of those needing ongoing medical attention in Haiti grows, patients who were not airlifted to foreign hospitals continue to receive treatment in make-shift field hospitals or on hospital ships in nearby waters.
NAPH members have sent to Haiti substantial donations of medical equipment and medications, as well as volunteer clinicians who are providing treatment and support in field hospitals and clinics. America’s urban safety net hospitals, which often serve as first responders in domestic mass casualty events, remain on the forefront of this volunteer effort. Some are assisting in direct health care delivery, while others are working with Haitian officials to reestablish the country’s health care infrastructure.
