One of the main goals of the research department at NAPH and NPHHI is to conduct research on major topics that are important to our members, including financial characteristics, quality improvement, disparities reduction, care coordination, emergency preparedness, and emergency department throughput. Each year, we publish several monographs and research briefs to disseminate our findings and share stories and promising practices for our members. We also share NAPH member stories and research findings at professional, academic, and industry conferences.
This year, of the 18 abstract proposals submitted, 15 were selected for presentation at four major national conferences and one international conference. These presentations also allow us to feature guest speakers from our member hospitals. This year’s research presentations are on the following topics:
• NAPH member experiences with implementing health care disparity reduction strategies outlined in the NPHHI 2008 publication, “The Healthcare Equity Blueprint;”
• How NAPH members are implementing the medical home model and the implications this has for increasing access to culturally competent care while reducing costs and emergency department overcrowding;
• The response of U.S. safety net hospitals in providing aid for the victims of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti;
• The relationship between transparency and quality performance in urban safety net hospitals; and
• Successful strategies used at safety net hospitals to improve ED throughput.
Our presentations at AcademyHealth’s Annual Research Meeting and its affiliated research interest groups, as well as the NACCHO Annual Conference, were met with great interest from other researchers and professionals in the health care industry. Over the next two months, we will continue to showcase NAPH and NPHHI research at additional peer-reviewed conferences. On October 10, NAPH President Larry Gage will travel to Paris, where he will present two research posters (entitled “Quality Performance Transparency and Accountability in Urban Safety Net Hospitals” and “Improving Quality of Care Using the Medical Home Model at Safety Net Hospitals”) at the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua) International Conference. These presentations will allow us to showcase the quality improvement efforts of our members to an international health care audience. On October 19, NAPH’s research staff will also present two posters (entitled “Strategies Used by Safety Net Medical Homes to Reduce Disparities in Health Care” and “The Safety Net’s Response to the 2010 Earthquake in Haiti”) at the Diversity Rx conference in Baltimore, MD. NAPH will end the 2010 conference season with the American Public Health Association’s (APHA) Annual Meeting & Exposition, to be held November 6-10 in Denver, CO. There, we will be presenting two posters (one on transparency of quality data and another on members’ experiences with efforts to reduce health care disparities), two presentations (one on the results of our Commonwealth Fund-supported research on emergency department throughput and another on NAPH member activities to provide disaster relief after the Haiti earthquake). We will also moderate two breakout sessions (“Safety Net Hospitals and the 2010 Haiti Earthquake” and “Safety Net Providers and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act”).
If you will be attending any of the upcoming conferences, please come to our presentations and say hello.
