9:45 AM. Fell crossing 5th Ave like a true New Yorker (too quickly and late for a meeting). Blew out knee. Really embarrassing -- lying in the middle of the road for a few seconds unable to move or stand. Crowd gathered quickly. One man who seemed to know what he was doing straightened my leg and actually popped the knee back in. Huge flash of pain then none. They helped me up and to the corner. I seemed to be able to stand ok. One step and another collapse. Bystander called 911. Cops on scene immediately. Many sympathetic gawkers. Mt. Sinai ambulance arrives within 10 minutes, but must take me to St. Vincent (that's what computer tells them -- no use arguing. I suggest Bellevue and they roll their eyes at each other. Very rough ride to St. Vincent. Met by tv cameras -- didnt know my fame had reached 7th Ave and 12th Street. Turns out they were filming a story on the closure of St. Vincent. (Great.). First thing I hear entering the ER is "Bellevue's on diversion". Second thing is man behind me completely restrained on stretcher raving about how he owns the Chase Manhattan bank. More to come...
