In honor of National Nurses Week, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius issued an official statement recognizing the contributions nurses make toward the health of the nation. The text of her statement is copied below:

During National Nurses Week, we recognize the incredible contributions that nurses make to keeping America healthy. Every day, America’s nurses bring commitment, leadership, and vision to the Nation’s health system. They fill many roles – as care providers, educators and researchers. There is no setting where health care is delivered where you won’t find a nurse.

At the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, we are always working to make sure nurses get the training and support they need to do their job.

Through the health care law, the Affordable Care Act, we’re supporting thousands of new Advanced Practice nurses, many of whom will receive incentives to practice in underserved communities. And we’re pleased that America’s nurses were among the first to sign on to the Administration’s Partnership for Patients, an initiative to improve the safety of health care in America.

This National Nurses Week, I want to thank nurses all over the country for the critical work they do on the frontlines of health care. Working together, we will bring better care and better health to all Americans.
