Feds Will Pick Up Tab for Medicaid Expansions

The Washington Post reported today in an article, Study: States will bear little cost of Medicaid expansion under health-care law that a new Kaiser Family Foundation study has concluded that the federal government—not the states—will bear most of the cost of Medicaid enrollment expansions anticipated under health reform. NAPH supported Medicaid expansions while acknowledging that it can be a double-edged sword in many states. Provider reimbursement rates are worse than inadequate in those states. If the federal government is truly footing the bill for expansion, it is imperative that the Congress and the Obama Administration also take this opportunity to establish equitable national payment standards for hospitals and other providers, similar to what has already been done for primary care physicians.
