Excellence in the Buckeye State

A few days ago I had my first visit to OSU Medical Center. There I saw an enterprise that is building a better safety net for the people of Columbus while advancing state-of –the art medicine for the world through cutting edge research.

OSU’s efforts are guided by a P4 framework designed to achieve predictive, preventive, personalized and participatory medicine and health. As a result they have embraced medical homes through the Access Health Columbus initiative. OSU is also focused like a laser-beam on curing unneeded readmissions by building systems for fast follow-up and empowering patients to manage their health. On top of that, OSU is creating new ambulatory facilities that will serve as needed access points for the underserved neighborhoods surrounding its University Hospital East.

But Ohio State has not stopped there. Partnering with the city of Columbus and the local housing authority, OSU is formally investing in the redevelopment of their near east side neighborhoods. This is a grass-roots approach, with local stakeholders and the faith-based community working together to go beyond healthcare to the real social determinants of health: schools, homes and the environment.

OSU is doing all this while redeveloping their main campus around patients and enhancing their status as a global center for biomedical research. Ohio State is a trailblazer and showing that NAPH members can serve the world as well as their neighborhoods.
