Brenner Logan, Jackson, FL
Jackson Health System
Brenner Logan, 3, had always been healthy and energetic, until he began to turn increasingly pale over several days, and his skin and eyes were completely yellow. At only two years old, tests showed that he was suffering from fulminant hepatitic failure, or acute liver failure, and that he might not survive without a liver transplant.
Brenner was transferred to Holtz Children’s Hospital where a specialist performed a rare transplant technique on him. With this procedure (auxiliary partial orthotopic liver transplantation, or APOLT) the doctor removed only part of Brenner’s liver and replaced it with part of a donor liver. Brenner is fortunate that over time his liver will recover and regenerate, leaving him healthy and able to live a normal, full life – none of which would be possible without the excellent immediate care he received at Holtz Children’s Hospital.
“Jackson Health System, because it’s a public hospital as well as a teaching hospital, was able to provide Brenner care that wasn’t available anywhere else in the country. They gave me my son back,” said Kristen Logan, Brenner’s mom.
