2010 Annual Conference Recap

Roughly 225 senior executives from NAPH member hospitals met at the NAPH Annual Conference to discuss the new health care paradigm. During the meeting, there were opportunities for networking and discussing the new health reform legislation and its impact on safety providers and vulnerable patients. Click here to view a photo slideshow capturing the event.

The NAPH 2010-2013 Strategic Plan also was unveiled. The draft plan sets forth a new vision for NAPH to be the nation’s leading voice for safety net hospitals and health systems and the patients and communities they serve.

The agenda included a rich mix of plenary and breakout sessions. Keynote speakers discussed how health reform legislation will drive innovation, change and transformation for care delivery.

To succeed in this state of change, plenary speaker Sen. Tom Daschle told attendees they should:

  • Be prepared for the robust demands of new and better health care services.
  • Be pragmatic - health reform will take time and great effort.
  • Form partnerships - public hospitals must reach out to stakeholders, governments, agencies and others to be full partners.
Later, TR Reid, author of The Healing of America, shared lessons learned from other industrialized democracies that provide health care coverage to all citizens.

Attendees also heard from David Moen, MD, from Fairview Health Services in Minnesota, who described how transformed delivery systems require leadership and new models of care, and Winston Wong, MD, from Kaiser Permanente, who challenged attendees to consider whether health reform will improve access to care for minorities.

Additionally, the event featured 11 panels for members and experts to share ideas and tools designed to help transform care delivery. Click here to access breakout session descriptions and presentations.
