                Dr. Ostermeyer describes the challenges her organization faced and how they were met, in the integration of psychiatrists and psychotherapist services at 15 large scale primary care centers within Harris County Hospital District in 2005. This highly innovative program has since brought high quality mental health care services in a coordinated, cost effective and patient friendly way and has resulted in higher physician and patient satisfaction. Discussion with participants in this call included the applicability of this program to other public hospitals and health systems.

The purpose of this call was to provide an overview of NQF’s national goals and priorities. Dr. Burstin, Senior Vice President for Performance Measures at NQF, described how NQF processes measures for development, review, and endorsement of quality and patient safety measures. She also described NQF’s health care quality national priorities, and the role NAPH members can play on expert panels and technical advisory committees. Speakers from member hospitals discussed their experiences serving on NQF technical advisory committees and how they were able to influence national measures.

The presentation also included an overview of the new accrediting body, DNV Healthcare Inc.'s National Integrated Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations Program (DNV NIAHO) and the significant differences between this accreditor’s approach and that of TJC.

Community Care of North Carolina has gained significant recognition as a successful, state-driven program that utilizes the medical home model to control costs and better serve the needs of low-income patients and Carolinas Healthcare System has proven to be an integral part of the initiative.
