HHS Announces Availability of $40 Million in Grants for Chronic Disease Prevention - June 14, 2011
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on June 7 announced $40 million in funds under the Affordable Care Act to help state and territorial health departments develop programs aimed at preventing chronic disease. The funds are intended to improve care coordination activities and are focused on five major causes of death and disability: heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes and arthritis. In addition, the program is meant to encourage environmental and policy changes to help reduce the impact of chronic diseases. Health departments in all 58 states and territories are eligible for funding. Applications are due by July 22 and may be accessed by going to www.grants.gov and searching for the Public Health Fund Coordinated Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion Program.
