HHS to Accelerate Start of Early Retiree Reinsurance Program - May 11, 2010

On May 5, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued an interim final rule announcing that it would launch the Early Retiree Reinsurance Program on June 1, ahead of the June 21 deadline set under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The program will provide $5 billion to companies providing insurance benefits to retirees 55 and older who are not yet eligible for Medicare coverage, and will be phased out with introduction of state exchanges, in January 2014.
