Committees of Jurisdiction Send Recommendations to 'Super Committee' - October 12, 2011
The Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction (or “super committee”) continues to deliberate behind closed doors on how to achieve the savings it was directed to identify in the Budget Control Act. This week, recommendations from the committees of jurisdiction are due to the “super committee.” So far, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions majority and the House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce minority have released their recommendations. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) announced that recommendations from the Senate Finance Committee minority will be ready by the end of this week. Committee chairs who are on the “super committee” have indicated that they will not be submitting separate recommendations. NAPH continues to monitor the “super committee” and will provide updates as developments occur.
Last week, NAPH met with White House officials and discussed the importance of protecting Medicaid. NAPH urged the administration to exclude a “blended FMAP” and cuts to provider taxes and GME from any deficit reduction legislation. NAPH is also working with coalitions to further broadcast the need to protect Medicaid. NAPH continues to contact legislators – and encourages members to do the same – urging them and the “super committee” to protect Medicaid.
